You Don't Need 10 Steps. Here's What You Actually Need.

You Don't Need 10 Steps. Here's What You Actually Need.

At some point in the last decade, skincare became a competition. More steps, more products, more actives and somehow, more confusion. The 10-step routine became a cultural moment, and with it came the idea that complexity equals effectiveness.

As an esthetician, I'm here to respectfully push back on that.

Where the 10-Step Routine Came From

The multi-step routine was popularized largely through Korean beauty culture, where layering lightweight, hydrating products is a long-standing tradition. In that context, it makes sense many of those steps are gentle, hydrating, and complementary.

But as the trend traveled, it got distorted. Steps multiplied. Actives got stacked. Exfoliating acids, retinoids, vitamin C serums, enzyme masks, and LED devices all ended up in the same routine sometimes on the same night. And skin started reacting.

The irony is that many of the skin concerns people were trying to fix sensitivity, breakouts, dullness, redness were being caused or worsened by the very routines they were using to address them.

What Too Many Steps Actually Does to Your Skin

Your skin barrier has a finite capacity to process what you put on it. When you layer multiple active ingredients, you're not necessarily multiplying the benefits you're often multiplying the stress.

Common consequences of over-complicated routines include:

  • Barrier disruption from over-exfoliation or incompatible actives
  • Increased sensitivity and reactivity over time
  • Ingredient interactions that reduce efficacy or cause irritation
  • Inflammation that presents as breakouts, redness, or flaking
  • A cycle of chasing new products to fix problems the routine created

None of this is what you signed up for when you invested in your skincare.

What Your Skin Actually Needs

Strip it back to first principles, and effective skincare comes down to three things:

  1. Clean without stripping. A gentle cleanser that removes impurities, makeup, and excess oil without disrupting the skin's natural pH or lipid barrier. If your skin feels tight after washing, your cleanser is working against you.
  2. Hydrate and support the barrier. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and squalane work together to draw moisture in, strengthen the barrier, and keep it functioning optimally. This is where most of your results come from.
  3. Protect. In the morning, SPF is non-negotiable. It's the single most evidence-supported step for preventing premature aging and maintaining the results of everything else you're doing.

That's three steps. Done consistently, with the right formulations, this outperforms a 10-step routine almost every time because it works with your skin rather than overwhelming it.

When More Steps Are Appropriate

This isn't a blanket argument against all actives or targeted treatments. There are absolutely situations where adding a vitamin C serum, a gentle exfoliant, or a targeted treatment makes sense when your barrier is healthy, when the products are compatible, and when you're introducing them gradually.

The key word is intentional. Every product in your routine should have a clear job. If you can't articulate what a step is doing for your skin, it probably doesn't need to be there.

"I've seen more skin transformations from simplifying a routine than from adding to one. Your skin doesn't need more it needs better." — Brittany London, Licensed Esthetician
