My Actual Morning Routine: An Esthetician's Honest 3-Step Ritual
People assume that because I'm an esthetician, my morning skincare routine must be elaborate. Multiple serums, misting, gua sha, LED therapy the works.
It's not. And I think that's worth talking about.
Here's exactly what I do every morning, why I do it, and what I've learned from years of working with skin professionally that led me to keep it this simple.
First: What I Don't Do in the Morning
I don't double cleanse in the morning. Unless you've been sweating heavily overnight or have very oily skin, a full cleanse in the morning is often unnecessary and can strip the barrier before your day even starts. I either rinse with lukewarm water or use a very gentle cleanse and some mornings, I skip it entirely.
I also don't use exfoliating acids in the morning. Those belong in an evening routine, where they can work overnight without the complication of UV exposure.
My Morning Routine, Step by Step
Step 1: Gentle Cleanse (or rinse)
I cleanse with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser lukewarm water, about 30 seconds, pat dry. The goal is to remove anything that's accumulated overnight without disrupting the barrier work my evening routine did. My skin should feel comfortable and neutral after cleansing not tight, not squeaky, not dry.
What I look for in a morning cleanser: low-pH, fragrance-free, no sulfates that strip. If it foams aggressively, it's probably too much for morning use.
Step 2: Serum on Damp Skin
While my skin is still slightly damp, I apply my serum. In the morning, I reach for the Citrus Glow Vitamin C Serum vitamin C is most effective in the morning because it works synergistically with SPF to provide antioxidant protection against UV and environmental damage throughout the day.
I apply it to damp skin deliberately. Hyaluronic acid one of the key ingredients needs moisture to draw from. Damp skin gives it exactly that, and the absorption is noticeably better.
I let it absorb for about 60 seconds before moving on.
Step 3: Moisturize + SPF
I apply my moisturizer while the serum is still slightly tacky this helps seal everything in. Then SPF on top, every single morning, regardless of whether I'm going outside.
UV exposure happens through windows. It happens on cloudy days. And the cumulative effect of skipping SPF even occasionally adds up over years in ways that no serum can fully reverse. SPF is the one non-negotiable in my routine.
Total time: under 5 minutes.
Why I Keep It This Simple
I've tried the elaborate routines. I've tested the products. And what I've found both on my own skin and with clients is that consistency with a simple, well-chosen routine outperforms an inconsistent complicated one every time.
When your routine takes 5 minutes, you do it every day. When it takes 45, you start skipping steps. And skipped steps mean inconsistent results.
Simplicity isn't a compromise. It's a strategy.
"The best skincare routine is the one you'll actually do. Every morning. Without negotiating with yourself about whether you have time." — Brittany London, Licensed Esthetician
